Lantern Workshop

 

For 2021, Georgina Solo, who has worked internationally in the field of visual arts, will be leading lantern making workshops based on the theme of Revolution. There will be a large exhibition of all the work on the theatre night of  “Kera A Stage” as well as at the Closing Ceremony in Rokka. During the workshops, the participants will be introduced to the art of lantern making, using subtle coloured effects and natural materials, and will create light-box tableaux illustrating battles and heroes of the Greek Revolution of 1821, filling the villages of Rokka and Kera with revolution!

After the exhibition, at the end of this year’s events, the workshop attendees will be able to take their lantern creations home.

ARTIST PROFILE

Georgina Drakouli Solo

Georgina’s arts practice is firmly rooted in community and celebratory arts events, as well as having extensive experience of scenic arts for film, theatre and TV. She has been the designer and maker of the Opening Ceremony for ‘Giortes Rokkas’ in Kissamos, Crete, from 2017 – 2019. Having grown up in three different countries, South Africa, Greece and the UK, each culture has informed her work since.

Her life-long ecological awareness, desire for sustainability, regeneration and the message of reduce, reuse and recycle has led to many projects with an environmental theme. With over 40 years of experience in the arts, her diverse work includes teaching young children puppet-making at the Eureka Museum of Childhood in Halifax UK, to being part of the lantern team who made the Opening Ceremony for the European Capital of Culture 2017 in Aarhus Denmark, to painting sets for the TV hit Peaky Blinders.

Instructions

Rokka and Kera villages are located in the northwest of the Prefecture of Chania, in the Municipality of Kissamos, 12 km from Kissamos, 39 km from Chania and 55 km from Chania airport. Following the E65 National Road from Chania to Kissamos, and turning to the Nopigia to Kera – Rokka hub, you will not have difficulty finding us. Rokka’s Square is located in the center of the village, right next to the main street from which you will come.
